Micro Four Thirds Lenses

My other articles related to the Olympus OM-D System.

This is an annotated list of lenses available for the Olympus OM-D. Pen, and other (mostly Panasonic) Micro Four Thirds (μFT) cameras.

If you are looking for (non-Micro) Four Thirds (SLR) lenses — see another list.

The table lists most of μFT lenses currently available, as well as those already discontinued (if they meaningfully differ from current). Latest or pending releases are highlighted.

I am also providing links to respective manufacturers' product pages, and, where possible, U.S. prices, with links to the B&H online catalog. (No, I am not getting a cut from them!)

Note: Some of these links occasionally get broken; don't blame me for that!

  • 2019/05/20 Fixed MFW for four lenses; added Sigma 16/1.4, MZD 12-200/3.5-6.3
  • 2018/12/20 Removed lenses by defunct companies Oprema and Meyer Optics (a few could have been actually made)
  • 2018/09/28 Added Laowa 4/2.8 Fisheye, 9/2.8 Zero-D, 12/1.8, 17/1.8; Sigma 56/1.4, Panasonic 10-25/1.7
  • 2018/03/03 Added two premium lenses by Panasonic: 200/2.8 (ouch!) and 50-200/2.8-4
  • 2017/11/06 Added two just-announced Olympus Pro F/1.2 lenses, also some non-coupled ones

See also: μFT lenses in the DXO database.

Private: Values in last column are the DXO Optics aggregate ratings on E-M1 II.

Legend

  • FL — the actual focal length in millimeters. The EFL (35-mm film equivalent) is twice this value.
  • MxApmaximum aperture (minimum F-number); for zooms two values, at shortest and longest FL are given, if different.
  • MFDminimum focusing distance in meters, sometimes possible only at some (unspecified) focal length. Measured from the sensor plane (sometimes from the lens front, but then it should be referred to as working distance).
  • MFW — minimum field width (mm) or (for wider lenses) diagonal angle, degrees.
  • IS shows the in-lens image stabilization (standard for Panasonic, rare option for Olympus).
  • D — dust- and drip-proof.
  • El/Gr — number of elements and element groups in the lens design.
  • A/S — number of elements with aspherical surfaces and those using special (low dispersion, high diffraction, etc.) glass.
  • Wgt — the weight, as per manufacturer's published specs.
  • D×L — lens dimensions (diameter and length), rounded to the nearest millimeter.
  • Filter — the front filter thread (mm).
  • Year refers to when the lens became available on the market. In case of a minor update, this shows the release of the original.
  • Price — as quoted by a selected merchant (usually B&H) when last checked. Treat it as a rough guide.

For lenses no longer in stock, last reported prices may be shown in parentheses.

  • Cov — frame coverage (manual lens table only):
    • FX — full frame, 24×36 mm
    • DX — APS-C, 16×24 mm
    • 43 Micro Four Thirds
  • Ck — click-stopped aperture ring:
    • C — click-stops
    • N — no click-stops
    • CN — both (switchable)

Lens Designation

The full lens name usually contains the brand, focal length and aperture numbers, and then anything the manufacturer wants; sometimes meaningful and sometimes not.

Olympus uses a number of abbreviations, often referring to the same lens differently:

  • All Olympus μFT lenses use the MZD prefix, which stands for M.Zuiko Digital.
  • Suffix PRO denotes the Olympus premium lens line.
  • Suffix or prefix ED indicates low-dispersion glass used for some lens elements.
  • Suffix EZ seems to indicate that the zoom is operated electrically.
  • Suffix II means an updated version, with minor changes (like a new multicoating). If otherwise identical, the older one is not listed separately.
  • Suffix R possibly means something, but nobody outside of Olympus knows what. My guess is that it means the same as II (like Revision?)
  • Additionally, the table uses * to mark lenses belonging to the Premium class (one notch below Pro), which is not reflected in the lens designation.

Full names of most Panasonic/Leica lenses would not fit into a line of text, therefore I'm using just the common sense.

  • The DG prefix may mean something, but I have to find out what it is.
  • Suffix X denotes Panasonic's premium lens line.

To make things worse, Panasonic product pages often contain naming errors or inconsistencies.

The Voigtländer brand is owned by a major Japanese lens maker Cosina.

[R] Almost all lenses by a Korean maker Samyang are also sold under another brand name, Rokinon. A few are also available as Bower products. I believe Samyang owns both these brands.

Remarks

As marked within square brackets in the table:
  1. Cosmetic upgrade (or other minor changes, like new coating) of the previous version (usually not listed).
  2. The Macro mode sets FL to 43 mm; MFD becomes 20 cm (field 36 mm wide, equivalent to 1:1 on "full frame"). 44 mm quoted by Olympus is wrong.
  3. Version II works with the new Panasonic in-body IS.
  4. There exists an older (noisier?) version of this lens.
  5. Maximum magnification (equiv.) of 2:1; the field is 17 mm wide.
  6. The MZD II was a complete redesign of the original MZD, then cosmetically evolved into II R.
  7. The lens has Manual Focus Clutch: push/pull focus ring to switch between MF and AF.
