Exakta Lens List (Partial)

This is a very incomplete list of lenses available in Exakta mount. At this early development stage stage it contains only some of the lenses in my collection, and those listed in the Aguila & Rouah books (A&R 2003, A&R 1987).

General remarks

  1. Only lenses in Exakta/Exa mount are listed; this includes also those using the external bayonet flange.
  2. Versions differing only in finish (stripes, dimples) are not usually listed separately.
  3. The year shown is that of lens introduction on the market; sometimes the first known listing in the literature, so that it should rather be treated as the lower limit.

Legend

  • Make: Lens manufacturer or distributor, usually as shown on the lens. A short form is used; e.g., "Meyer" instead of "Hugo Meyer" or "Meyer-Optik Görlitz".
  • Model: Lens name, usually as shown on the lens. Sometimes the same model name is shared between entirely different lenses; e.g., 58mm and 75mm Biotar.
  • Year: Year the lens was introduced. This is approximate and sometimes hard to establish.
  • F: Focal length, in millimeters. If the value given on the barrel is in different units, it will be shown in Notes; e.g., "5cm".
  • F#: Lens aperture; usually as shown on the lens.
  • Mx: The value to which the aperture closes.
  • Ap: Aperture type as described here
    • M — manual, no clicks, German Normalblende (NB)
    • C — manual with click-stops, Rastblende (RB)
    • P — preset, Vorwahlblende (VB)
    • S — semi-automatic, Spannspringblende (ASB)
    • A — automatic, Vollautomatische Sprigblende (VSB) or Vollautomatische Druckblende (VDB)

    The German terms are also shown above, as they are often used in various sources. Note that for some lenses which I did not try out myself, a M may be shown, while the lens is actually of the C type.

  • D: Minimum focus distance, in meters (converted from feet if necessary).
  • El: Number of lens elements.
  • Thr: The front filter thread, in millimeters. For lenses without filter thread, B stands for bayonet; P for the push-on filter size.
  • Finish: Useful for identifying of different versions of a basically the same lens: Bk (black), BP (black plastic), Sv (silver: chrome, usually over aluminum or steel), A (aluminum), S (steel).

    Data on lens finish may be incomplete and sometimes inaccurate; this is hard to avoid.

  • Notes: Here I am using some acronyms: OB (lens uses outer bayonet), Bel (bellows lens), TR (tripod ring), TM (tripod mount, non-rotating), Hd (detacheable hood), LM (light meter).
  • s/n: Serial number of the best-known example, with the source shown as: (W) my own collection, (AR87) Aguila & Rouah book.

[1] Black finish from 1956 onwards.

[2] The front half of the lens was an anamorphic attachment which could be mounted on an enlarger lens to reverse the image "squeezing", therefore producing panoramic pictures very much like wide-screen movies shot on 35-mm film.

[3] Also made by Kamera Bau-Austalt (Liechtenstein) with chrome focusing ring.

[4] Also made in black from 1961.

[5] Closer focusing possible with second gear.

[6] A rare, early version of the Auto-Quinon has the step-down knob not next to the release (like most Steinheil lenses), but on the lens barrel. Known s/n: 1375948(W).

[7] These Vivitar lenses (probably made by Tokina) use the interchangeable T4 mount (introduced by Soligor).

[8] This "macro" Flektogon, was made in dimpled and striped finish concurrently to the non-macro version (focusing from 33 cm). As late as in 1984 it was also made in a (partially?) plastic barrel with a regular, diamond pattern on the focus ring.

[9] I'm listing pre- and post-war 3.5/50 Tessars separately in spite of the fact that all specs are the same for both types. In the pre-war ones the inner lens barrel protrudes about 5 mm in front of the knurled aperture ring (it is flush in the post-war ones).

[10] A rare version of the preset 4/135 Sonnar was also made with minimum aperture of F/45, for macrophotography.
